If your floors are cold to the touch, it may be time to insulate the crawl space. Insulating a crawl space increases the comfort level in your home, decreases heating and cooling expenses and dampens noise.
Crawl space insulation, as a part of overall home air sealing and insulation, helps maintain your entire home's energy efficiency. Without insulation, heat and cool air are easily lost through the floor. Insulation also helps to preserve the air quality and reduce energy costs.
Typical Crawl Space Insulation recommendation:
The typical recommended application would be to insulate & air seal the crawlspace walls with 2 inches of 2 part closed cell foam. Insulate the crawlspace rim joists with 3 inches of 2 part closed cell foam. This would not only create a thermal barrier for the floor above but would also insulate the rim joists to an R-20 rating which would keep unwanted cold air infiltration that contributes to a cold floor. We would also typically install a 6mil poly sheet on the crawlspace floor as a vapor barrier for moisture as well as a radon barrier
